Feed the Fire!

Looking for ways to “SPARK' your metabolism? Join the club. It seems that just about everyone is trying to piece together his or her personal metabolic puzzle in hopes of losing weight and melting away pounds of unsightly body fat. To be honest…it's not nearly as scientific as some “experts” make it sound.

Your metabolism refers to a series of complicated processes, but most people are specifically interested in its role in helping them better deal with their nutritional intake. For starters, forget what you have ever learned about eating. Next, apply the following series of new (and surprisingly easy) steps to your daily nutritional protocol. The results may surprise you.

Be a breakfast eater.

Breakfast eaters are less likely to overeat later in the day, lose weight faster and maintain weight loss better than breakfast skippers. Plus, it's called BREAKFAST for a reason…”Breaking the Fast”. During the night, your body slows down metabolic processes and goes into conservation mode. The earlier you get something into your stomach, the sooner your metabolism will switch to the “on” position.

Make it a goal to eat 4-6 small meals per day.

Think of your body as a fire and food - as wood. Even the strongest fire will go out if it has nothing to burn. By eating clean burning fuel more frequently, your metabolism doesn't get an opportunity to slow down. Feed the fire and it WILL burn. Limit or skip meals, and the fire WILL go out!

Eat every 3 hours.

Regular feedings help keep blood sugar levels more stable, resulting in higher energy levels and the absence of hunger pains. It's also a proven fact that if you wait until you are “starving” to eat, there is a much greater likelihood that you'll overeat and/or make poor food choices.

Drink more water.

Most people know that water hydrates the body and flushes your system of toxins and impurities but it's also a FACT that drinking 5 or more glasses a day can cut your heart attack risk in half! Here's more, er, uh food for thought? Water is a great appetite suppressant. Drink two glasses 30 minutes before each meal or anytime that you are feeling hungry. You'll get a full feeling that assists you in: 1) eating less at mealtime and, 2) controlling self-sabotaging urges.

As far as drinking water throughout the day, indulge often. Divide your bodyweight in half and make it a rule to drink that number in OUNCES daily.

Lift weights 2-3 times per week.

Muscle tissue burns a significantly large number of calories in order to sustain itself. In comparison, Adipose tissue (FAT) burns a relatively small number. The goal, increase lean muscle mass and decrease fat stores. In fact, even if two people weigh exactly the same, the one that has a higher percentage of lean muscle mass will burn more calories not only throughout a typical day, but at rest as well.

Circuit style weight training is a great way to build muscle tissue and develop your stamina and endurance. Choose 10-12 exercises that focus primarily on the major muscle groups of the body (Multi-joint work best) and rest briefly between sets. Because there are many variations of this style of training, professional guidance is a must.

Cardiovascular Exercise 4-5 days per week for 20-45 minutes.

It's simple - Cardiovascular exercise BURNS body fat. So, if your goal is to lighten the scale or more specifically, look great in your favorite swimsuit, regular adherence to a CV schedule can help you reach your goals. Activities like walking (for beginners), jogging, stair climbing, EFX, and Versa Climber all qualify as effective and viable modalities of training. Start off exercising continuously for 20 minutes and add 5 minutes each week until you can exercise without stopping for 45 minutes. Intensity is crucial in order to gain maximum benefit. Monitor your pulse to ensure that you are exercising between 70-85% of your max heart rate. This will establish a good base of conditioning. As your heart and lungs become more efficient, institute interval training to intensify your metabolic burn.

Again, because individual variation exists, additional education and instruction is required here. Get professional assistance.
