The Amazing Health Benefits of Fish OilSpecial thanks to the Greenland Eskimos on this one.
Way back in 70's researchers studied the fact that despite consuming a diet high in fat, the Eskimos suffered from an exceptionally low incidence of heart disease. And you guessed it, fish oil was discovered to be at the root of this positive finding. Soon after, further research found fish oil to provide an astonishingly high number of additional health benefits.
Fish oil (an Omega-3 fatty acid) has been found to lower triglyceride levels in the bloodstream, decrease the risk of sudden cardiac death, lower blood pressure and even protect against certain forms of stroke. And it doesn't stop there; add a decreased risk of cancer and prevention of 2nd heart attacks to the list. It's also proven effective in the treatment of diabetes, depression, arthritis and ulcerative colitis (the latter two a result of its strong anti-inflammatory properties).
About 85% of Americans are deficient in the oil that fish provides, so it's safe to say that you fall into this group. Basically, we just don't eat enough fish and even the 2-3 times per week recommendation is difficult for most people.
If adding fish to your diet is as difficult as the studies say, try downing 2 tablespoons of health store bought fish oil a few times per day. Can't stomach the thought? Then turn to fish oil capsules. They are virtually tasteless and provide the same plethora of positive health benefits minus the having to hold your nose and bearing it part.
If you choose to take fish oil, make sure that the product you select contains between 300-600 mg per serving of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). EPA and DHA are both omega-3 fatty acids that are linked to a number of physical and mental health factors. If the fish oil supplement you choose has less than 300 mg/serving of these nutrients, look for another product. As with everything else, consult your physician prior to adding any supplement (including fish oil) to your nutritional regimen.
