Start Where You AreDuring my tenure with the Houston Rockets, I posted signs throughout my weight room that were intended to motivate the players and help them think about their charmed lives a little bit - especially the temporary nature of things. The fact that we are only in a given place for a given time and your daily approach to life carries more importance and urgency than you might think. One sign in particular that got me a lot of flack was one that read, START WHERE YOU ARE. Based on sarcastic responses and blank stares I received when players read the sign, it was obvious to me that few of them GOT it. Today I have my own gym, and that sign is posted here as well. Some things never change. Few people seem to GET it. It's time to clear it up. START WHERE YOU ARE - complex in its simplicity, or vice versa, means not waiting for something to take place before taking positive, necessary action. Specifically in the case of physical fitness, we pledge to start on Mondays that never come. Over indulge during the holidays promising that the 1st of the year will bring newfound discipline and focus. We vow to spend more time with our families as soon as we get…more time. It's a never-ending form of procrastination that paralyzes personal development. The truth of the matter is that Thursday is just as good a starting day as Monday. January 1st is no different than May 23rd. You are never going to have more, or a better time. Evolution never takes a backseat. Take action, today, not next week or Monday or the day after the day after. Take that step, no matter how scary or daunting the task at hand may be. Don't wait to get better. START WHERE YOU ARE. Move forward.
