Life Psalm

I picked up this book in the airport called, The Bounce Back Book, by Karen Salmansohn. Basically, it's a cool little book that can help you deal with adversity and setbacks in your life; kind of light and humorous but really accurate when it comes to how people react to bad happenings. She also wrote a book a few years ago called, How to be Happy, Dammit!, which I have also read and was really awesome.

Anyway, there's a lot of great stuff in both books, but the following excerpt (from The Bounce Back Book) struck me as especially cool. Basically, human beings are sometimes not only lazy in body, but also heart and mind. We pray to God for Him to give things to us, and we question His existence when what we ask for isn't what we get. I think we tend to view God as some kind of a Santa Clause or Easter Bunny and when things happen to us (and not forus), we subconsciously believe that we are being forsaken or punished for being bad. You know, the naughty or nice mentality.

This little Psalm for the Psyche (as Salmansohn coins it), may possibly help you look at the not-so-positive events that take place during life a little differently. She didn't write it but I have to give her props for finding it and putting it in her book. Fantastic!

Enjoy and apply.

PSALM FOR THE PSYCHE

(Stolen with respect from The Bounce Back Book, by Karen Salmansohn).

I asked for strength…

And God gave me difficulties to make me strong.

I asked for wisdom…

And God gave me problems to solve.

I asked for prosperity…

And God gave me brain and brawn to work.

I asked for courage…

And God gave me danger to overcome.

I asked for love…

And God gave me troubled people to help.

I asked for favors…

And God gave me opportunities.

I received nothing I wanted.

But I received everything I needed
